Volvo XC60 specs call for the use of a unique tool to place the electric parking brake into service mode. Rear brakes in service mode give you a chance to replace the brake pads.
Volvo XC60 Specs: Understanding the Parking Brake
You can quickly change the brake pads on cars that have a standard foot or hand activated manual parking brake. You can push the piston back to provide enough space to fit the caliper over the new brake pads. The 2014 Volvo XC60 doesn’t work like that.
VolvoXC60 specs call for calipers with an electric motor attached. The motor turns a screw-like mechanism that spins as it moves the brake pads into contact with the rotor when the driver pushes the parking brake lever. Pulling up on the lever activates the motor in the opposite direction to remove the parking brake.
Volvo XC60 Specs: Understanding Parking Brake Service Mode
Deactivating the parking brake does not move the piston far enough to allow you to fit the caliper over new brake pads. To perform a replacement, you must first put the electric parking brake into service mode. Doing this requires an Electronic Brake Service tool that plugs into the car’s diagnostic port.
Volvo makes a tool that accommodates Volvo XC60 specs that will put your parking brake in service mode, so you can push the piston back without damaging the parking brake mechanism and motor.
Mechanics who do not know about the electronic parking brake can cause damage by attempting to push back the caliper piston. Doing so can strip the threads on the transport mechanism and destroy the motor.
Caution: Attempting to push back the piston on the rear brake caliper without first activating service mode can result in expensive and severe damage.
Volvo XC60 Specs: Save Yourself Time and Money
Autel makes an Electronic Brake Service Tool. Dubbed the Autel EBS301, the tool purportedly works with parking brakes on cars from about a dozen manufacturers, including Volvo. Don’t buy the Autel EBS301.
Despite the marketing claims made by the manufacturer, the tool does not accommodate Volvo XC60 specs for models newer than 2012. Pay attention to this: The Autel EBS301 Electronic Brake Service Tool will not work for XC60s from 2013 and later.
Volvo XC60 Specs: Plan B
Despite being unable to move the Volvo XC60 electric parking brake into service mode, you can still change your brake pads using the following procedure:
- Remove the parking brake motor from the caliper by removing two T30 Torx bolts. After removing the screws, gently wiggle the motor assembly until it disengages from the transport mechanism. Set the motor on the suspension to prevent damaging the wires or the electrical connector.
- Insert a T40 star bit into the mechanical assembly to engage it. As you do, rotate it by hand clockwise until the movement stops. You can now safely push back the piston.
- After replacing the brake pads, reattach the motor.
Volvo XC60 Specs: A Final Note
You can alternatively leave the motor attached to the caliper and manually apply 12 volts to its terminals to use the motor to spin back the transport mechanism. Doing this might damage the motor or your car’s electrical system, so we don’t recommend such an approach because it does not take Volvo XC60 specs in consideration.
