Many describe the”Ark” made in the wilderness (Exodus 25) as “The Ark of the Covenant.” It is more accurately called, “The Ark of the Testimony.”
And thou shalt put into the ark the testimony which I shall give thee. – Exodus 25:16
The contents of the Ark
Everything the people of Israel did in the wilderness revolved around the Ark of the Testimony and the Mercy Seat, which sat atop it. The contents of the Ark comprised God’s testimony against the people.
- The law
- Aaron’s rod
Priests constantly busied themselves about the service of God but only entered into the holiest place (where the Ark was) once per year. God spoke from the Mercy Seat, between the cherubims, first to Moses and then to Aaron and the succession of the priesthood.
